Discover the origins of the handpan
The handpan is much more than a simple musical instrument. Its fascinating history dates back to the 1970s, when two Swiss inventors revolutionized the world of percussion.
A modern instrument with ancient sounds
Inspired by the Trinidadian steel drum, the first Hang® was created in 2000. Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer spent 24 years perfecting their creation.
Here are the key stages in its evolution:
- 1976: acoustic research begins
- 1999: first working prototype
- 2001: limited commercial release
- 2010: the term “handpan” emerges
The legacy of Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer
The creators filed several patents to protect their invention. Their company, PANArt, remains the ultimate benchmark for purists.
Comparison of the original Hang® and the modern handpan:
| Feature | Hang® | Handpan |
|---|---|---|
| Number of notes | 8-9 | 9-12+ |
| Materials | Nitrided steel | Various alloys |
| Average price | €2,500 | €1,200-1,800 |
Today, the hang drum inspires festivals around the world. Events such as HangOut USA attract thousands of enthusiasts each year.
“Our goal was to build a bridge between tradition and innovation. The sound of the Hang® speaks directly to the soul.”
